Microphone History:
The Velocibel 36A ribbon microphone and its predecessor, model 35, appear to be very similar in design and construction to Amperite microphones of a similar era. We have not yet found any documentation for the 36A but the 35A appears in a catalogue dated 1948, part of which can be viewed at the French language DOCTSF website.
The Dynabel and Velocibel microphones were made in Paris, France by S.I.M.E.A., which is the acronym for the Société Industrielle de Construction de Matériel Électro-acoustique.
The example in our collection has been modified with additional magnets to produce a stronger output.
Technical Description:
The Velocibel 35A ribbon microphone is constructed from a pair of elegant cast metal side plates which screw into either side of the motor. These two plates surround a folded metal plate which holds the output socket, and a folded perforated grill. This assembly is then mounted with a cast metal yoke.
The ribbon is fitted to a tufnol board frame which then screws into the front of the magnet assembly. The magnetic field is provided by two block magnets which are clamped in place with a steel back plate via a pair of screws. This arrangement allows the magnets to be replaced if needed - our photos show the Velocibel with both original and replacement neodymium magnets.
