Microphone History:

From Milab's post on Facebook.

The DC-63 was a top Pearl/Milab model that was first released in 1972.

A second generation Pearl DC-63 was produced 1979 with more intuitive switches than the first generation. This model is still found in studios all over the world.

The DC-63 was an extremely versatile microphone with a long list of possible settings and variations.

Only the very early units carry the name PML (Pearl Microphone Labs). In 1980 the name was changed to Milab.

From the Milab 1981 catalog

DC-63 Variable Condenser.

This is our largest selling of our Milab models. It has 11 combinations of pattern control plus 2 positions of pad and 2 positions of low frequency roll-off (44 combinations of pattern, pad and lo-cut in all). Pattern and pad selection is by means of highly reliable ring switches and a 6-position potentiometer placed conveniently on the body of the microphone. The large rectangular dual membrane condenser capsule is unique and is approxinalely one-inch in surface area which provides a purity of sound that must be experienced.

Compared to the AKG 414, the DC 63 is smoother in response without the edginess of the 414. The DC 63 is usually compared to the Neumann U-87 where the transparency of sound is most noticeable. It has found uses in all applications from very close vocal or drum pick-up, to distant placement where the ambiance of the environment is desired.

Technical Description:

The Milab DC-63 is a large-diaphragm, multi-pattern condenser microphone featuring Milab’s distinctive rectangular capsule. Polar pattern and a -12 dB pad are selectable with the two rings near the base and a high pass filter is controlled by a dial closer to the capsule.
