There are two distinct versions of the ML-16. The earliest models had a narrower, longer ribbon and different pole pieces that are similar to the earlier ML-15 model. These are typically a beige colour. Our earliest ML-16 is dated 1962 and the ribbon measures 36mm long and 2.1 mm wide. This is shown on the left in the internal photographs above.
Later microphones are usually a khaki green colour and have a wider ribbon which is 30 mm long and 2.6 mm wide. The examples in our collection with this geometry are dated 1971 and 1972. This is shown on the right in the internal photographs above.
Many ML-16 microphones have internal blast screens of different types. . This might be a piece of tuffnol or bakelite glued in front of the ribbon, or, more commonly, a pair of brass baffles on each side of the motor. This is in addition to wire grill and a layer of fabric. These elements protect the ribbon and ensure they were durable when used for speech, but for recording musical instruments, the mics undoubtedly sound better without the baffles.

1. Purpose
The M.L-16 bidirectional ribbon microphone is designed for radio broadcasting, sound recording, sound reinforcement systems, indoor and outside broadcasts.
2. Package Contents
The microphone comes with the following components:
a) microphone capsule in a housing with a swivel, a flexible 1.5 m long two-wire shielded cable ending in a plug, and a tabletop stand; b) protective case: c) Case; d) Instructions for use with technical specifications for the microphone.
3. Basic technical specifications
a. Operating frequency range 50-15000 Hz with a frequency response flatness of no more than 10 dB.
b. Standard microphone sensitivity at a frequency of 1000 Hz with an active load of 250 ohms and a sound pressure of 0.1 N/m2: not less than -78 dB.
c. Nominal load impedance - 250 ohms.
d. Microphone dimensions: height - 255 mm, housing diameter - 54 mm, stand diameter - 118 mm. Weight-1.5 kg
5. Operation, Storage and Warranty
To connect the microphone to the circuit, use the plug connector or, if the microphone line needs to be extended, pierce the cable termination as shown in Figure 3. During operation, the microphone should be placed as far away as possible from alternating current lines. Protect the microphone from impacts and sudden vibrations. After use, place the microphone in a cover to protect it from dust and metal filings. Microphones should be stored in
cases and pouches, in rooms with a relative humidity of no more than 80% and a temperature above 5 C.
The manufacturer guarantees the normal operation of the microphone, subject to these operating and storage rules, for one year from the date of shipment to the customer. The microphone is shipped sealed. If during the warranty period and any malfunctions not the manufacturer's fault are detected, the consumer may return the microphone for replacement with the faulty seal, along with the cut-off inspection coupon.
If the microphone is opened by the consumer, the manufacturer bears no liability for the microphone's continued operation and will not accept any claims.
