Microphone History:

Reslo, a.k.a. Reslo (Sound) Ltd., a.k.a. Reslosound, was a British manufacturing company who made audio equipment and produced A LOT of microphones between about 1937 and 1978. In just 40 years they went from making primitive carbon button style mics through ribbons to modern looking electrets and handheld dynamics. In the middle were the ribbons that we associate with the brand, including the RB and CR models used by a well-known beat band from Liverpool. The RB was in production from the late 1950s to 1973, when it was replaced by the short lived MR1.

MoMics note.

We have worked on hundreds of Reslo RB microphones over 20 years and they vary greatly, with numerous small changes to the magnets, inner grills, transformer laminations, along with various amounts of felt and fibreglass pads around the ribbon. These small changes can add up to a big difference in behaviour, as illustrated by our measured frequency response. The blue line shows the response of an early RBL, which is a low impedance 30 ohm model, whereas the red line is a later model red label RBM, with 200 ohm output. We would expect the RBM mic to have a higher output by about 8dB, which we see at higher frequencies. However it has relatively less bass than the RBL. In this case the transformer design is responsible for much of the reduced bass response.

Technical Description:

The Reslo RB was availiable in two versions; RBT and RBTS models.

  • RBT: Features a "T" base, which is a die-cast tubular mounting containing the line transformer and connecting socket.
  • RBTS: Similar to the RBT with the "T" base but lengthened to accommodate a slide-type on-off switch.

The Reslo Type RB microphone is available in the following impedance values:

  1. RB/L: 30-50 ohms (single impedance)
  2. RB/M: 250 and 600 ohms (dual impedance)
  3. RB/H: 30-50 ohms and Hi-Z (dual impedance)
  4. RB/S: 30-50 and 1,000 ohms (dual impedance)
  5. RB/Y: 30-50 and 10,000 ohms (dual impedance)

Output is via a 3-pin Reslo connector
