Microphone History:

Translated and summarised from the MikroSammler website.

Joachim Wetzel (born 1918) was a trained radio mechanic who started a small workshop in Leipzig in 1945, initially focusing on tape recorder development. As his business grew, he expanded to a larger workshop where he began producing condenser microphones and developing his own microphone capsules, which were also supplied to other manufacturers.

From around 1960, he concentrated solely on microphone production and later established a service centre, repairing microphones for brands like RFT, ERWA, and Neumann. Many microphones carry his sticker as proof of servicing.* He continued this work until shortly before his death in May 1989.

*One of the Thiele microphones in the MoMics collection carries a Wetzel label.
