Microphone History:
Momics view:
The Beyerdynamic M260 is one of the most common ribbon microphones that we see for repairs. It has a pistonic style ribbon which is corrugated across the ribbon at the ends only, with additional ridges lengthways to increase the rigidity. These can be successfully repaired with a standard corrugated ribbon, albeit with the loss of 1 to 2 dB output level.
The M260 evolved greatly over the years. The earliest model is a pale blue colour with a fixed cable in place and often has red lettering on the grill. Middle aged models were produced with a grey-blue body and silver grill, and later versions from the 1980s are black with a black band around the grill. The final major revision switched from a straight body tube to a tapered tube, making it look more like a Shure SM57.
Microphones marked with .80 have a high pass filter (bass cut) built into the transformer.
The silver M260 pictured with REVOX branding would likely have been sold in combination with a revox tape machine.
